Wood Is Good!

Advantages of wood burning stoves

The Environment

Wood when sourced correctly from a sustainably managed forest, wood is a carbon neutral fuel

when burned in a modern stove that requires very little processing and only emits the same

emissions into the atmosphere that the tree took in over the course of its life.

The only processing required is the cutting of the tree which should be done locally as opposed to

importing.

It’s often compared to diesel emissions from cars which is incorrect, as a wood stove is emitting

from an average height of 7 meters whereas a car emits its fumes at an average height of 500mm.

Get rid of the uncertainty and take control back from the energy companies

The world has been in turmoil in the last few years with energy prices soaring. Ireland has a

massive dependency on imported energy such as gas, oil and even electricity. This is reflected in

our electricity bill where we have all seen at least a 40% hike in the last year alone.

If you can’t pay for your electricity, you are cut off, so no heat, no water, and no cooking. Wood

is a great way to manage your bills and provides that back up should the worst happen.

All commodities have risen in price, but locally sourced firewood has not increased at the same

level.

Price

Electric cost per kWh €0.24 (24-hour average using day and night)

Wood cost per kWh €0.16 (based on average list price from Cotter Bros firewood, Co. Limerick)

Open fire – max 30% efficient which is every €10 spent €7.00 is wasted

Stove – 80% efficient every €10.00 spent only €2.00 wasted

There are lots of different variations and skewed prices when dealing with energy companies,

semi-state, and state companies. One example is that certain organisations take electricity as being

100% efficient and a stove at 80%. That is technically correct but if you leave the immersion on

then that can’t be considered and will rack up massive debts very quickly. A stove can only ever

burn what’s in it.

Wood is much easier to budget for and can be bought annually, monthly, weekly, or even daily

depending on the homeowners’ circumstances.

Agendas and propaganda

We all have an opinion, let it be right or wrong it’s still only our opinion Recently we have all

come across various commentators putting out alarmist opinions and views based on different

reports throughout the years.

Most are based on open fires that emit massive volumes of PM2.5, NOx, No, Co, and Co2 all in

plumes of black smoke. This is caused by incomplete combustion, wet timber, and smoky coal.

These figures are given the label of solid fuel without any breakdown of what type of appliance

was tested.

New Eco-Design stoves are a far cry from the smog that we experienced in the 1980’s. No longer

do we gauge just the efficiency, but we now measure the emissions and particle matter also.

We use technology such as Co burn technology and double baffle systems to strip the smoke of

those harmful by-products.

Alternative Energy

There are many energy sources out there claiming green credentials and indeed they are very good

but how green are they and is there such thing as zero emissions? The short answer is no, and I’ll

give an example:

An electric car will offer zero emissions in the area where it was purchased/used. What was

created before that? The battery was made in the far East more than likely using electricity more

than likely from a coal powered power station. The mining of the components were mined using

diesel machinery. The ship used to bring the battery across the world was also powered on diesel.

When its end of life what will be done with it? So, the emissions were created just not here but

far, far away.

Progression is great but the most basic offerings are often the cleanest, greenest and the best.

The greenest and most sustainable fuel is locally sourced wood!
